Division Entry Guidelines

****Make sure you enter the correct level. There is a $10.00 fee to change levels/divisions after your registration is processed***

DIVISIONS:

  • Preschool and up.
  • Any division with 6 (six) or more contestants will be divided at the competition’s discretion.
  • Dance Spectacular reserves the right to add or combine divisions as needed.
  • Routines with more than 3 (THREE) tumbling skills will need to enter the Acro Division
  • Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, Acro/Open

DIVISION LEVELS:

  • NOVICE DANCER:
    • A NOVICE dancer has NEVER competed before and is new to dance. This is their first/second year of dance training with no more than 2 hours of dance class per week. In this category, basic ballet and jazz technique moves are encouraged, as well as level changes and transitions in choreography.
    • Double/Triple turns of any kind are not permitted in Novice. Firebirds, Calypso’s, or any type of advanced leap and any tumbling/acro move other than somersaults are not permitted in the Novice category.
  • AMATEUR DANCER:
    • An AMATEUR dancer has competed before and has had no more than 4 years of dance training, and dances no more than 3 hours per week.  In this category, basic ballet and jazz technique moves are encouraged as well as level changes and transitions in choreography. More advanced turns such as tour en l’air, axels, and barrel turns are permitted. Side grand jete’, chaine’ jete’, and stag leaps are permitted. Basic tumbling, cartwheels, handstands, and back walkovers are permitted.
    • The dancer has previously won queen in the novice division.
    • Double/Triple turns of any kind are not permitted in Amateur. Firebirds, Calypso’s, or any advanced leap other than somersaults are not permitted in the Novice category. Amateur category. No cartwheels.
  • INTERMEDIATE DANCER:
    • An Intermediate dancer has been in several competitions and has had at least 4 to 5 years of dance training. And dances no more than 5 hours per week. Creativity in choreography, shapes, patterns, and creative transitions are welcome. In this category, ballet and jazz technique moves are encouraged with an emphasis on technique. Double/triple pirouettes, fouette’, pirouette a la seconde’, and directional turns are encouraged. Firebird, Calypso, and more advanced leaps are also encouraged. Aerial, front and back walk-over, cartwheels, and basic tumbling skills are approved. If your routine has more than 3 (THREE) tumbling/acro moves, you should consider moving into the ACRO category. The dancer has previously won QUEEN in the Intermediate division.
  • ADVANCED DANCER:
    • An advanced dancer has competed for years and has had 6 or more years of dance training.  Advanced dancer has 6+ hours per week. In this category you will be allowed to do any advanced skill.  Technique is strongly encouraged in advanced routines versus multiple tricks.  Also, artistry and creativity are strongly recommended Judges love this aspect. If you have more than 3 tumbling/acro moves you need to enter the ACRO division.
      • The dancer has previously won QUEEN in the intermediate division.
      • **Remember, acro is meant to enhance your routine, not distract from it. You are being judged on your technique, skill, and execution, not on how many tumbling/acro moves you do in these categories: Jazz, Lyrical, contemporary, and hip-hop.
